Bricklayer Qualifications: What You Need in the UK
Bricklaying in the UK is not a licensed trade, but the right qualifications change your day rate and which sites you can work on. Here is the route, the costs and the alternatives.
By Tony Musso on
Bricklaying is not a licensed trade in the UK, so technically you can lay bricks without a single qualification. In practice, the bigger and better-paid sites - housebuilders, civils contractors, anything CDM-regulated - will not let you on without a CSCS card, and the day rate gap between a labourer who can lay bricks and a qualified bricklayer with NVQ Level 3 is significant. This guide explains the qualifications that actually matter in 2026, the apprenticeship route, alternative adult routes, time to qualify, and where you can earn while you learn.
The headline qualifications
| Qualification | Why it matters | Typical time | |---|---|---| | Level 2 Apprenticeship (Bricklayer Trailblazer) | Standard UK entry route, paid from day one | 2 to 3 years | | NVQ / SVQ Level 2 in Trowel Occupations | Proves competence on a real site | 12 months (assessed) | | NVQ Level 3 in Trowel Occupations | Unlocks Gold CSCS card, higher day rates | 12 to 24 months after Level 2 | | CSCS card | Required for almost every commercial UK site | Issued on passing health, safety and qualification checks | | First aid + asbestos awareness | Often required by main contractors | 1 day each |
The standard route: bricklayer apprenticeship
The Level 2 Bricklayer Trailblazer Apprenticeship is the main UK entry route. Apprentices are employed by a local builder, contractor or training provider, typically working four days a week on site and one at college.
Duration: usually two years, sometimes three depending on the employer. On completion, apprentices receive:
- Level 2 Diploma in Bricklaying.
- Functional Skills in maths and English if not already held.
- Eligibility for the CSCS Skilled Worker (Blue) card.
Apprentice wages range from around £160 to £360 a week depending on year, age and employer. Full breakdown is in our [bricklayer salary UK](/blog/bricklayer-salary-uk/) guide.
Apprenticeships are advertised on [findapprenticeship.service.gov.uk](https://www.findapprenticeship.service.gov.uk) and through local colleges (CITB-affiliated providers run most bricklaying courses).
Adult routes if you are over apprenticeship age
You can still apprentice as an adult - there is no upper age limit on the apprenticeship itself, although fewer employers take older apprentices because of the wage scale.
Common alternatives for adults:
- **City and Guilds Level 2 Diploma in Bricklaying** at a college - typically £2,500 to £4,000, full-time over one year.
- **NVQ Level 2 Onsite Assessment** - for people already laying bricks regularly. An assessor visits site, observes work and signs off competence. Costs £1,500 to £2,500.
- **Specialist Applied Skills Programme (SAP)** - intensive 16 to 30 week course at CITB-approved centres for adults switching trades.
The on-site NVQ route is the fastest way for someone already labouring or doing bricklaying informally to get a recognised qualification.
CSCS card explained
The Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) card is what gets you onto a UK site. Colours by stage:
| Card colour | Who it is for | Requirement | |---|---|---| | Green Labourer | General site labour | CITB Health, Safety and Environment test | | Red Trainee | Apprentices and trainees | Enrolled on approved qualification | | Blue Skilled Worker | Bricklayers with NVQ Level 2 | NVQ/SVQ Level 2 + H&S test | | Gold Advanced Craft | Bricklayers with NVQ Level 3 or supervisor | NVQ Level 3 + H&S test | | Black Manager | Site managers | NVQ Level 6 or 7 |
Moving from Blue to Gold usually lifts day rate by £20 to £40 because of which sites you can work on. The CITB Health, Safety and Environment test costs £22.50 and is taken at a Pearson VUE test centre.
Time to qualify
| Route | Time | |---|---| | Apprenticeship | 2 to 3 years, paid throughout | | Full-time college Level 2 | 1 year | | Onsite NVQ Level 2 assessment | Around 12 months alongside work | | NVQ Level 3 after Level 2 | Further 12 to 24 months on the tools |
So from zero to Gold CSCS card and high day rate, expect three to five years total.
Salary at each qualification step
| Stage | Typical pay | |---|---| | Apprentice | £8,000 - £18,000 | | Newly qualified, Blue CSCS | £24,000 - £30,000 PAYE or £150 - £200 a day CIS | | Experienced, Gold CSCS | £32,000 - £42,000 PAYE or £200 - £280 a day CIS | | Chargehand / gang leader | £40,000+ PAYE or £350+ a day on price work |
Specialist add-ons that materially help
- **Fireplace and chimney work qualifications** - niche and well paid.
- **Heritage and conservation pointing** - significantly higher day rates in protected areas.
- **SSSTS / SMSTS supervisor training** - opens the door to chargehand and supervisor roles on bigger sites.
- **First aid at work (3-day course)** - often a requirement on main contractor sites.
Alternatives if bricklaying is not the right fit
- **Groundworker** - similar entry, slightly higher tolerance for varied work.
- **Stonemason** - similar skills, more heritage and conservation work.
- **Plasterer** or **Carpenter** - related Level 2 trade apprenticeships.
What to do next
- If you are 16 to 24, apply for an apprenticeship - it is the most cost-effective route by a wide margin.
- If you are an adult already labouring on site, push for the on-site NVQ Level 2 route through CITB.
- Book the CITB Health, Safety and Environment test early - it is required for every CSCS card.
- Use the [free career assessment](/assessment) to confirm bricklaying is the right long-term trade for you - the [bricklayer salary UK](/blog/bricklayer-salary-uk/) guide covers the financial side.
