Health Visitor Qualifications UK

To work as a UK health visitor you need NMC registration as a nurse or midwife plus an SCPHN qualification. Here is exactly what that means in 2026.

Health visitors are specialist community public health nurses who support families with children under five. The role is regulated by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC), so the qualification path is fixed - but the routes into it are more flexible than most candidates realise.

The two non-negotiable qualifications

  1. **NMC registration** as an adult nurse, mental health nurse, learning disability nurse, children's nurse, or midwife.
  2. **SCPHN (Specialist Community Public Health Nurse) qualification - Health Visiting** - usually a one-year full-time PgDip or MSc, NMC-approved.

You cannot practise as a health visitor without both. The SCPHN is what gets you the Specialist Community Public Health Nurse annotation on your NMC PIN.

The realistic routes in

Route 1: Already an NMC-registered nurse or midwife

  • Apply for a **funded SCPHN place** with an NHS trust or council. Most trainees are seconded with full salary.
  • Training is one year (PgDip) or two years part-time (MSc), 50% in academic study, 50% in supervised practice.
  • Funded through NHS England and Health Education England partnerships in most regions.

Route 2: Not yet a nurse

  • Complete a BSc Nursing (3 years) or a Nursing Degree Apprenticeship (4 years, paid).
  • Spend at least 12 months consolidating practice on the NMC register.
  • Then apply for SCPHN funded training.

Route 3: Career-changer with relevant degree

  • An accelerated MSc Nursing (2 years) for graduates with relevant first degrees, then SCPHN.
  • Total time from career change to qualified health visitor: typically 4-5 years.

Funding and pay during training

  • Trainee health visitors are usually paid at **NHS Band 5** while training (about £29,970 in 2025-26).
  • On qualifying, you move to **Band 6** (£37,338-£44,962), with some senior roles at **Band 7** (£46,148-£52,809).
  • Outer and inner London weightings add up to £8,000+ on top.

What you need before applying for SCPHN

  • Current NMC registration in good standing.
  • Usually at least 12 months post-registration experience.
  • A secondment offer from an NHS trust, council or partner provider.
  • DBS clearance, immunisations and occupational health check.

Honest realities of the role

  • High caseloads, especially in deprived areas. Skills books and developmental reviews stack up.
  • Strong autonomy. You manage your own diary and home visits.
  • Emotional load is significant - safeguarding cases, perinatal mental health, infant loss.
  • The role is statutory and recession-resistant, with predictable pay progression.
